Sustainability in Canmaking

The can making industry is expanding at an unprecedented rate. Many legacy can plants are being modernized with new technology, faster equipment, and can size change flexibility to meet the future market demands of 2-piece aluminum cans. Conversely, the supply of experienced canmaking personnel and knowledgeable maintainers is not keeping pace with the rapid expansion of the market.

Hog manure, renewable natural gas, and an improving environment

By Bill Cooper

Hog manure and an improving environment are seldom, if ever, used in the same sentence. I was honored last week to be a media guest of Roeslein Alternative Energy, LLC at their north Missouri hog farm where they are successfully producing renewable natural gas from hog manure.

A Road Map to Preventing Epic Flooding

Written by Rudi Roeslein

Another year; another ‘record-breaking’ flood; another debate about levees. Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. It is time to recognize that development in flood plains, wetlands and riparian buffers is causing these catastrophes. It is also time to recognize that nature has provided the only solution that is practical, cost effective and scalable.

We can soak up water before it floods.

A Better Way: Prevent Epic Floods in the First Place

Written by Rudi Roeslein

After epic Midwest winter flooding, there’s renewed discussion about reducing the damage next time.  But instead of spending valuable resources trying to hold flood waters back, let’s do a better job preventing floods in the first place.

From Grassland Restoration to Renewable Energy.

Some ideas come out of the blue. But an idea taking shape in the hog barns and rolling hills of northern Missouri came out of the green–the grasslands revered by an entrepreneur, industrialist, and dedicated conservationist. Missouri Prairie Foundation (MPF) technical advisor Rudi Roeslein loves native prairie for its beauty and unique set of ecological services. Now Roeslein is staking his reputation on an ambitious goal of returning 30 million acres of highly erodible land to native grasslands in 30 years.

Global Growth Opportunities: China and Beyond

Much is being made about what will happen to the Chinese economy, which is set to grow in 2013 at the slowest pace in 23 years. The can making industry is watching with keen interest as the new Chinese administration faces slowing factory production and reduced investment. While some are cautious about the future in China and other portions of Asia, one of the leading systems integrators in the D&I (canmaking) industry believes the market will remain strong through 2014. Roeslein and Associates Inc. opened a fabrication and construction facility in Shanghai nearly three years ago to establish a local presence in a country it believes will eventually become the largest consumer market in the world. Per capita consumption in China is currently only about 17 cans per year, far below the 360 cans each person consumes in the United States annually. But Roeslein and Associates believe China’s 1.3 billion people and growing middle-class point to increased consumption.

Applying Modularization, Unitization, and Preassembly to the Nuclear Power Industry

Although Roeslein & Associates, Inc. is a household name in the canmaking industry, it is less known within the markets to which it is new: pharmaceutical, oil and gas, refinery, power, chemical and petrochemical. Roeslein is earning a reputation for reduced start-up times and improved efficiencies using its signature approach, Modularization, Unitization and Preassembly.  One example of this type of success is Roeslein’s development of an automated sump pump system for an East Coast nuclear facility in 2012.
