Roeslein’s Environmental Stewardship Committee hosted its first Aluminum Recycling “Canpaign” across all domestic locations from June 21 – September 22. The event was hosted to support Canned Water for Kids.
Across the U.S., Roeslein’s facilities and job sites competed to fill recycling receptacles with used cans. These cans could be from home or work, but the employees were advised to not crush the cans as that can make the recycling process harder. The standings were based on the number of receptacles filled divided by the number of employees at the location to leverage the competition. A biweekly update was issued to update employees on location standings. Additionally, employees could submit a photo of their can donation to be entered to win an Amazon gift card.
Kris Schaefer, Coordinator for Roeslein Alternative Energy, helped organize the campaign. She states, “Overall, I think the ‘CANpaign’ was a huge success. Each location was competitive and creative with their recycling, and I feel this event brought awareness to how much aluminum we consume and how important it is to recycle this sustainable material.”
Roeslein ended the recycling campaign by filling 1,416 receptacles, averaging about 8,496 pounds of aluminum. Roeslein Modular Fabrication in Red Bud, Illinois, won the competition, recycling 1,313 receptacles.
At the end of the competition, all cans collected were donated to local recycling facilities. In addition, Roeslein made a monetary donation towards Canned Water for Kids (CW4K), a charity that funds clean water projects, provides disaster relief and provides education on clean water initiatives globally. Roeslein has been a proud supporter of the foundation and continues to purchase CW4K canned water for Roeslein locations. 95% of the money collected from each canned water sale goes to support, fund, and deliver clean water initiatives that are saving children worldwide.
